Social networking and libraries

Social networking and libraries

In the past the way we might have marketed an event would have been through creating fliers and posters by hand, through a newspaper, a magazine, talking to people, the radio and maybe even with a commercial on tv. Now if you want to promote at a school tickets sales, fundraisers, dances and book fairs, these events and activities can generate a better turnout if they are marketed through social networking platforms. Don’t be mistaken all the previous ways to market and promote an event, product, sales or idea can still work, but not in the speed you might need it to. Technology has definitely grown and come a long way in the past 20 years. With this library have embraced social networking as a way to promote activities and reach out to the community. In “Marketing of Academic Library Services through Social Networking Sites: Implications of Electronic Word-of-Mouth” marketing today is now described as the electronic word of mouth. EWOM can be successful by posts with certain keywords and hashtags, reviews, reels and sharing with other friends and family. We do almost everything on the phone or computer now that it makes sense that we would use the internet to connect socially and as a way to promote the library. Every month I create monthly library fliers to promote events and activities happening. Next, I will post it on our school Facebook page. Another way I promote the library is through our weekly video announcements. Students from video production create videos based on the events going on in the library which I may post on Facebook as well. Social networking is one of the best ways to get the word out for a library event and activity.
